Frequently Asked Questions

01

What kind of students does your tutoring center help?

At Smart Kids, we help all kinds of students.  Most of our students come to us working 1-to-2 grade levels below their grade level, however we also tutor students who are ahead of their class; these students come to us because their math or reading classroom can no longer challenge them.

Nevertheless, at Smart Kids we begin all of our tutoring programs with pre-assessment tests.  These tests tell us what the student knows, doesn’t know, and what grade level the student is working at.  No matter the results of the pre-assessment test, Smart Kids helps all students Catch-Up, Keep-Up, and Get-Ahead.

I’ve hired private home 1-on-1 tutors to work with my child and I haven’t seen the results we were looking for.  How is Smart Kids different?

The main reason private tutors won’t succeed is that they don’t know how to help your student with his or her learning gaps.  Private tutors just don’t have the tools (identification of learning gaps, all of the curriculum your student needs).  They help with homework assignments, but that means it's mostly the tutor’s work and not your student’s.  At Smart Kids our pre-assessment diagnostic tests tell us exactly what your student knows and doesn’t know.  Our academic tutoring program  prescribes individualized lesson plans, targeting where your student shows deficiencies.  It’s that simple, we have the tools and experienced and certified tutors to help and ensure success.

I understand your pre-assessment tests, and the individualized prescribed lesson plans, all of which sound great!  What I also need is for my child to have help with his current homework assignments.  Can you also help with them?

Yes!  We have a program called Homework Support, which has proven very helpful.  While your student works on their prescribed lesson plans, they will ultimately eliminate the need for homework help.  Our homework support tutors will help your student learn, understand, and ensure correct answers on all of his or her homework assignments.

My daughter is struggling in school, but one of her problems is that she is very shy, won’t raise her hand (even if she knows the answer), and her self-confidence is at a low.  Can you help?

Yes we can!  We understand children who are shy and need help building their self-confidence.  Once your daughter begins working on lessons that she is deficient in, her self-confidence will build, and while working with our tutors, who are trained in this area, she will overcome her shyness.  Smart Kids' tutors are experienced in helping in this area.  Be assured your daughter will build her self-confidence and overcome her shyness as she continues in our tutoring program.

05

My student gets A’s on his report card, but when he takes the NWEA, his scores are disappointing.  Why?  How can you help?

School report card grades and scores on national exams are different.  Schools teach at local standards and national exams are administered with the Common Core standards.  Smart Kids is aligned with the Common Core standards, and why many of our students begin working 1 to 2 grade levels below their current grade level.  Smart Kids pre-assessment tests help us fill your students learning gaps and our individualized lesson plans target areas in need of further development.  Coupled with our motivating and encouraging tutors, Smart Kids can help!

My daughter understands how to work and get the correct answers to her Math problems, but if the math questions are Word Problems, she runs into trouble.  Can you help?

Yes!  Math word problems add extra non-important words, to ensure the student understands what math is required to get to the correct answer.  What we have found is that many of our students have trouble “comprehending what they read” and for that reason, he or she may get the wrong answer.  We help by teaching our students what information in not needed, how to identify which words give clues to the kind of math that is needed to solve the problem, and finally through their individualized lesson plans in vocabulary, language usage, and reading comprehension.  It is through our A+ program and encouraging tutors we help our students master this problem.

My family speaks English as a second language, and when my son tries to read and write at school, he has many problems.  I know that it affects him so much that even if he knows the answer he will not raise his hand in fear that the other students will laugh at him when he speaks.  How can you help?

At Smart Kids we see this problem more often than you would think.  Many of our students speak English as a second language and therefore have trouble at school.  At Smart Kids we identify their vocabulary and language usage deficiencies.  Once we correct these deficient areas, you, his teacher, and most importantly your son will see a raise in his reading comprehension and self-confidence.
